The translation of hundreds of classical Greek documents into Latin was commissioned by the learned Pope Nicholas V who ruled the Church in Rome from 1397 until 1455. He undertook the embellishment of Rome to make it into the model capital of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the rebuilding of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. Building a mostra, a grandiose celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the arrival point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was directed by the Pope to build a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. Adjustments and extensions, included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.

The Early Civilization: Fountains

The Early Civilization: Fountains During archaeological digs on the island of Crete, many varieties of channels have been detected. Along with offering water, they distributed water which accumulated from deluges or waste material. The primary materials used were stone or clay.Early Civilization: Fountains 049553433937.jpg When made from clay, they were commonly in the shape of canals and spherical or rectangular conduits. The cone-like and U-shaped clay pipes which were found have not been detected in any other culture. The water provision at Knossos Palace was managed with a strategy of clay piping that was located beneath the floor, at depths starting from a couple of centimeters to many meters. The clay water pipes were also used for accumulating and holding water. This called for the terracotta conduits to be suitable for holding water without seepage. Below ground Water Transportation: This system’s undetectable nature might mean that it was actually manufactured for some sort of ritual or to distribute water to restricted communities. Quality Water Transportation: The water pipes could also have been used to carry water to fountains that were different from the city’s regular technique.
