Original Water Delivery Techniques Rome 175511369895790327.jpg Original Water Delivery Techniques in Rome With the building of the very first elevated aqueduct in Rome, the Aqua Anio Vetus in 273 BC, folks who lived on the city’s hills no longer had to be dependent only on naturally-occurring spring water for their requirements. During this period, there were only two other systems capable of supplying water to high areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which gathered rainwater. To provide water to Pincian Hill in the early 16th century, they applied the new method of redirecting the flow from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground channel. Spanning the length of the aqueduct’s network were pozzi, or manholes, that gave entry. While these manholes were manufactured to make it much easier to protect the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use buckets to extract water from the channel, which was practiced by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he acquired the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Reportedly, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t enough to meet his needs. By using an opening to the aqueduct that ran below his property, he was set to fulfill his water demands.
