Acqua Vergine: The Answer to Rome's Water Problems

Acqua Vergine: The Answer to Rome's Water Problems Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct built in Rome, commenced providing the people living in the hills with water in 273 BC, although they had depended on natural springs up till then. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the lone technological innovations available at the time to supply water to spots of greater elevation. To furnish water to Pincian Hill in the early 16th century, they utilized the emerging method of redirecting the motion from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. While these manholes were created to make it less difficult to preserve the aqueduct, it was also possible to use containers to pull water from the channel, which was carried out by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he invested in the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. He didn’t get a sufficient quantity of water from the cistern that he had constructed on his residential property to obtain rainwater.Acqua Vergine: Answer Rome's Water Problems 1313531901744.jpg To provide himself with a more practical means to obtain water, he had one of the manholes exposed, giving him access to the aqueduct below his residence.
