Attributes of Outdoor Sculpture in Archaic Greece

Attributes of Outdoor Sculpture in Archaic Greece The primitive Greeks developed the very first freestanding statuary, an amazing achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Kouros figures, statues of adolescent, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the majority of the statues. Thought of by Greeks to embody beauty, the kouroi were created into rigid, forward facing positions with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were always nude, well-developed, and athletic. The kouroi became life-sized starting in 650 BC. A huge period of transformation for the Greeks, the Archaic period introduced about more forms of government, expressions of art, and a greater appreciation of people and cultures outside of Greece. However, these clashes did little to hamper the development of the Greek civilization.
